Cat/Dog
Note:

Singapore has been free from rabies since 1953.  Cats and dogs may be required to be vaccinated against rabies, tested for an acceptable level of rabies antibodies, and/or must undergo quarantine for either 10 days or 30 days upon arrival in Singapore depending on which category of country they are arriving from.

  • If your pets are coming from Category A countries (Australia, UK, Ireland and New Zealand), no quarantine is required.

  • If your pets are coming from Category B countries (Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United States of America (Guam and Hawaii only)), no quarantine is required but the pets must be vaccinated against rabies and tested for an acceptable level of rabies antibodies.

  • If your pets are coming from Category C countries (Belgium, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, United States of America (except Guam and Hawaii), your pets must be vaccinated against rabies and tested for an acceptable level of rabies antibodies and will be quarantined for either 10 days or 30 days upon arrival in Singapore.

  • If your pets are coming from Category D countries (all other countries other than those in Category A, B or C), your pets must be vaccinated against rabies and tested for an acceptable level of rabies antibodies and will be quarantined for 30 days upon arrival in Singapore.

Please note that the no-quarantine policy for Category A and B countries only applies to cat/dog that has cleared the post-arrival veterinary inspection and complied to all veterinary regulations for import.

However rules and regulations may change and more countries could be added in the no-quarantine list in the future, so please check our website regularly for latest updates.

Requirements:

Veterinary certificate

A veterinary certificate dated not more than 7 days prior to departure is required for cat/dog coming in from the scheduled-countries.  This certificate must be issued by the Government Veterinary Authority and stating that during the 6 months period prior to your pet's departure:

  • No case of Rabies has been reported and
  • Your pet has been continuously resident (minimum 6 months) in the exporting country.

Pre-export check-up

Cat/dog must be examined by a qualified/registered veterinarian within 7 days prior to the date of departure.  This is to ensure that your pet is healthy and free from any infectious or contagious diseases and fit for travel.

Besides being part of the import requirements, thorough physical and clinical examinations are very important as any underlying illness not detected may be detrimental to your pet during travel.

Treatment for parasites

Cat/dog must be treated for parasites within the time frame given prior to departure. Internal parasites (worms) treatment must be done within 4 days and external parasites (ticks and fleas) between 2 to 10 days.

Vaccination

Vaccination against common cat/dog diseases is required and often available in a combination vaccine normally refers to as the core vaccine, which should be given within 12 months (yearly booster) and more than 14 days from the date of departure.

Veterinarians is certain countries may be practicing less frequent core vaccination i.e. once every two or even three years, but the Singapore veterinary authority will only accept vaccination validity of up to one year (12 months) only

Cat/dog less than 16 weeks of age must be vaccinated at least twice, 3 to 4 weeks apart and the date of second vaccination must not be less than 14 days from the date of departure.

Implantation of microchip

Cat/dog must be implanted with ISO-compatible microchip prior to arrival in Singapore.  This can also be done on arrival although but not advisable.

Reservation of quarantine space

Advance reservation of quarantine space is necessary if post-arrival quarantine is required.  It is recommended that the quarantine reservation be done 2 to 3 months in advance to secure a quarantine space.  Quarantine reservation with short notice given will be subjected to availability of quarantine space.  You should only make all other necessary travel arrangements after you have secured a quarantine space for your cat/dog.

Application for Import permit

An import permit from the Singapore veterinary authority is required for every shipment.

Important!

Planning for your pet’s arrival is very important.  Arriving on a Sunday, eve or public holiday in Singapore is definitely a big NO!  As all pets will be subjected to post-arrival inspection at the Changi Animal and Plant Quarantine (CAPQ) prior to release, therefore you shoud make sure that your pet arrives within the authority’s operation hours (More info on CAPQ is available in our PET QUARANTINE section).

Quarantine space must be reserved at least 3 months in advance especially during the peak period from April till December where the quarantine spaces will be heavily booked.  It is therefore advisable to start your pet's travel arrangement and booking of quarantine space early.
