Residential Requirements

General requirements for keeping of cat/dog in Singapore vary depending on the type of housing where the pet is kept i.e. private or public housing (Housing Development Board).

Private Housing (Condominiums/Landed properties)

There is no restriction on keeping different breed of dogs (except for the banned dog breeds not allowed in Singapore) in private properties.  However there is a limit of 3 dogs per household.  Prior approval from the government veterinary authority (AVA) must be obtained for keeping of more than 3 dogs.  No restriction on keeping of cat.

It would also be advisable to check with your property's management, as some properties might have their own rules and regulations on keeping of pet, breeds allowed and limitation on the numbers in a household.

Public Housing (HDB)

Under the Housing Developement Board (Animals) Rules 1989, you can only keep one dog of toy breed in public housing.  Please click here for list of HDB-approved dog breeds.  Keeping of cat within the public housing premises/unit is currently not allowed.
